NBA Roundup : Warriors Grab Their First Playoff Berth in 10 Years

Chris Mullin made three straight baskets in overtime to help the Golden State Warriors clinch their first playoff berth in 10 years Sunday with a 120-119 win over the San Antonio Spurs at San Antonio, Tex.

Mullin’s six points gave the Warriors a 120-112 lead with 1:28 remaining in overtime, but the Spurs rallied behind a three-point shot by Jon Sundvold and two baskets by Alvin Robertson to pull within one point with 29 seconds left.

San Antonio had a chance to win, but David Greenwood’s shot was blocked by Joe Barry Carroll. Greenwood fumbled the rebound and couldn’t get another shot off as time ran out.

“Even though we downplayed it (making the playoffs), we decided to bring some champagne along on the trip,” Warrior Coach George Karl said. “These guys have taken a lot of negative stuff over the years. I have confidence we can win in the playoffs.”

Carroll led Golden State with 29 points, while Mullin had 21. San Antonio was led by Robertson with 25 and Greenwood with 24. It was the Spurs’ sixth straight loss.

Philadelphia 106, Boston 104--Charles Barkley scored 28 points and stopped Larry Bird when it counted to give the 76ers an overtime win over the Celtics at Philadelphia.

Boston scored the first five points in overtime to take a 104-99 lead, but Philadelphia rallied to go ahead, 105-104, with 1:19 remaining on a tip-in by Barkley.

After a free throw by Roy Hinson increased the lead to 106-104, the Celtics worked for the last shot, but Bird, bothered by Barkley, threw up a one-handed shot from the baseline that missed badly with one second left.

It was one of the few times Barkley, who guarded Bird one-on-one for most of the game, was able to stop the Celtic forward. Bird finished with 39 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists, but his fifth triple double of the season wasn’t enough as Boston’s road record fell to 19-19.

Barkley had 18 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 blocked shots to go with his points as the 76ers out-rebounded the Celtics, 47-34. The win gave the 76ers a split of the six-game season series with the Celtics in their final regular-season meeting.

Detroit 125, Milwaukee 107--Rookie John Salley scored a season-high 28 points, and Adrian Dantley and Isiah Thomas each scored 18 to lead the Pistons to the win at Pontiac, Mich.
