Fight fans across the United States and Canada destroyed closed-circuit locations where audio and visual difficulties caused problems in viewing the Hagler-Leonard title fight.

One of the worst incidents occurred at the packed Rose Garden theater in Clarksburg, W.Va., where a crowd of about 800 rioted after the satellite signal delivering a telecast of Monday night’s 12-round WBC middleweight title fight at Las Vegas was lost, police said.

No arrests were made, however, and all patrons, who paid $20 or $25 for a ticket, are to receive refunds.

In the Rosemont Horizon at Rosemont, Ill., 12,000 fans were upset by problems with the telecast, when the two giant screens in the arena went black late in the first round and didn’t fully recover until the seventh round. The picture also blacked out sporadically during the final few rounds.

At San Diego, about 200 angry fans mobbed Cox Cable’s office, when they were upset about seeing blank TV screens after paying up to $45 to watch the fight.

About 5,000 subscribers paid in advance to see the pay-per-view event. Some didn’t know they had to punch a special code into their converter to see the broadcast.

At two locations in Hawaii, technical difficulties plagued the closed-circuit telecast of the bout.
