Campanis Won’t Comment--for Now

Al Campanis, reached at his Fullerton home Thursday morning, said he would not comment on his firing as Dodger vice president in charge of player personnel until the furor over his nationally televised comments on blacks in baseball slackens.

“I’m not going to give interviews now,” Campanis said. “Down the road, after there has been some time, I will give interviews. (For now) I’ll let what was in the press release stand.”

Asked how he has been handling the criticism from black leaders and civic groups, Campanis said: “Everything is fine. I am fine. I’m going to take some time off.”

Manager Tom Lasorda and Executive Vice President Fred Claire, who is assuming Campanis’ duties, both said they had spoken to Campanis Wednesday night.

“He’s down,” Lasorda said. “He’s sad.”

Campanis was not among the 46,289 fans who attended Thursday’s home opener, but he sent Lasorda and the Dodger players a telegram to assure them that he will remain with them.

“I want to wish you all a most successful 1987 season,” the telegram read. “Although I am not there physically, I am with you in heart and spirit. Life sometimes presents some obstacles in your path. However, I know that all of you will do your best and make us all proud of you. I am hopeful you are aware of my true beliefs.”
