6 Vie Tuesday for Burbank School Board

The final showdown arrives Tuesday for six candidates competing in a runoff for three vacancies on the Burbank school board.

In the field are two attorneys, a management executive, a community volunteer, a school principal and a housewife who doesn’t want to be elected.

The housewife, Marilyn Huston Paggi, 37, received more than 2,600 votes in the city’s February primary election. She had attempted to withdraw from the race, citing personal and health reasons, several days before the balloting.

Her showing helped prevent any of the eight primary candidates from receiving the 50% plus one vote needed to win a seat outright.

City officials said Paggi withdrew too late to have her name removed from the ballot.

Paggi said Friday that she is endorsing another candidate, Charles A. Goldwasser, 36, an attorney.

The other candidates are incumbent and attorney William S. Abbey, 41; Dwain S. Bender, 45, a management executive; Tomme Lenz, 54, a community volunteer, and Walton L. Ragan, 61, a school principal.

The only issue to surface during the election is how best to deal with declining enrollment. None of the candidates wants to close schools, preferring instead to realign grade levels to make more efficient use of existing facilities.
