Churchill Downs to Be Recommended as Site of the ’88 Breeders’ Cup Series
The selection committee for the 1988 Breeders’ Cup will recommend that Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., be selected to hold thoroughbred racing’s championship series, the Lexington Herald-Leader reported Sunday.
The newspaper quoted a source close to the selection process as saying that Churchill Downs was picked over Keeneland in Lexington and tracks in Florida and New York.
“We’ve pretty much made our decision, but I’m not at liberty to say what it is,” said Brownell Combs II, who is a member of the selection committee.
“There has been a decision. I’m sure the word has traveled pretty fast. But it isn’t official and it will not become fact until it is voted on and approved by the full board.”
Keeneland Chairman James E. Bassett III said Churchill Downs will be recommended to get the Breeders’ Cup, with the date tentatively set for Nov. 5, 1988. Bassett said Keeneland had withdrawn from consideration.
The Breeders’ Cup board, which may overturn any recommendation by the site selection committee, is scheduled to meet April 24 in Lexington.
