Baseball Commissioner Peter Ueberroth says in next week’s TV Guide that he’s against using instant replay in major league baseball because the “umpire is part of baseball’s romance, (and) to overrule him with a camera would be an affront to his dignity.” When asked about overruling the umpire if he is wrong, Ueberroth responded, “I would say he is right 99% of the time. For the other 1%, it isn’t worth bringing automation into the game.” Atlanta Braves manager Chuck Tanner asserted, “Instant replay would be our second worst mistake. Our first was the designated hitter. If you want to help baseball, leave it the hell alone.”
