A fire apparently ignited by arsonists burned two units at an apartment complex in Southeast San Diego on Thursday morning.

Fire Department spokesman Larry Cooke said firefighters were summoned to the 3200 block of Ocean View Boulevard at 5:05 a.m., and found fire and smoke billowing out of the second floor of the two-story complex.

The blaze burned through the floor of a vacant unit on the second floor to the dwelling below, where a patient on a kidney dialysis machine was staying. The patient, who was not identified, escaped and was taken to San Diego Physicians & Surgeons Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

The fire appeared to have been set, officials said.

Damage to the structure was estimated at $40,000, Cooke said.
