The Pittsburgh Pirates have announced that the club sold 713,348 tickets prior to opening day this season, an 11% increase over the 643,363 sold last year.

The Pirates also had a 28% increase in the number of ticket plans sold in the exhibition season, with fans purchasing 13,250 compared to 10,341 last year, said Steve Greenburg, the club’s vice president for sales and marketing.

“In the last two years we have introduced 22-game, 17-game and 11-game plans which clearly better meet the needs of those who cannot attend more games . . . That, combined with fact that our opening day crowd (52,119) was the largest ever to see a Pirates game at Three Rivers Stadium, gives us a very positive start to the season,” Greenburg said.
