Ryan Helps Davis Strike Out Nine Times in Two Games, but Reds Beat Astros, 3-0
It was appropriate that Nolan Ryan would would help Eric Davis of Cincinnati set a strikeout record Saturday night as the Reds scored a 3-0 victory over the Astros in 10 innings at Houston.
Davis, by striking out five times, tied the major league record for number of strikeouts in a single game and also broke the major league record for number of strikeouts in two successive games. He struck out four times Friday night, giving him nine stikeouts in two games. The old record was eight, held by five players.
Ryan, who gave up 3 hits and struck out 11 in 8 innings, fanned the Reds’ slugger three times Saturday.
However, the Reds had the last laugh. They jumped on Larry Andersen and Dave Smith for three runs in the top of the 10th to win. Kurt Stillwell’s two-run single highlighted the rally.
