An organization representing more than 1,000 former baseball players unveiled plans for a sprawling retirement center in Florida for former major leaguers.

The Major League Baseball Players Alumni Assn. said it has joined a Florida development group for a project costing between $50 million to $100 million and covering up to 1,200 acres.

The project is tentatively planned for Lakeland, Fla., according to alumni association president Jim Kaat, a major league pitcher from 1959 to 1983.

It would feature condominiums and homes for former players, medical facilities, a shopping center, baseball stadium for alumni games, a golf course and a baseball museum to complement the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y.
