1987 Draft : Titans Calhoun, McLean Drafted in Ninth Round
Two Cal State Fullerton football players--tailback Rick Calhoun and defensive tackle Ron McLean--were chosen in the ninth round of Tuesday’s National Football League draft.
Calhoun, a 5-foot 8-inch, 190-pounder who set Titan career records for rushing yards (2,646), carries (507) and total touchdowns (23), was selected by the Detroit Lions. McLean, a 6-4, 255-pounder who was in on 63 tackles and had two fumble recoveries last season, was selected by the New York Jets.
“I heard I’d probably go late, somewhere around the ninth to 12th round, but I’m just happy to get drafted by somebody,” said Calhoun, who will report to Detroit this morning. “I’m just going to go out there and try my best, and do what I have to do to make the team, even though my size might be against me.”
Calhoun, a graduate of John W. North High in Riverside, and an honorable mention All-American selection by the Associated Press last season, was the 230th player picked overall. McLean, who played at Santa Maria’s Righetti High, was the 241st player chosen. He could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
