DROSS ATTACK

Share

Richard Cromelin’s review of Luther Vandross’ concert performance (“Vandross Just Doesn’t Go That Extra Distance,” April 17), went the extra distance in demonstrating his ineptitude as a music reviewer.

It’s somewhat incomprehensible to imagine an entertainer of Vandross’ stature expounding on the details of a personal tragedy within the context of his concert performance. It’s even more ludicrous to think that a reviewer of Cromelin’s reputation would not only expect that of a performer, but personally attack Vandross and label him “superficial” because he failed to share the experience with us.

I didn’t pay $18.50 to hear about Vandross’ personal problems. I also didn’t go expecting to hear Marvin Gaye, Al Green or Freddie Jackson, unlike Cromelin, who seemed confused as to whom he was reviewing.

I went to be entertained, to adulate and enjoy Vandross. In that respect, I feel Vandross entertained and performed to the best of his ability, and should be judged accordingly.
