Dana Point : 2 Men Rescued After Small Boat Capsizes

Share

Two men whose 12-foot sailboat capsized in darkness off Dana Point were rescued by a passing boater who “just luckily was close enough to hear them yelling,” a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Department said Friday.

The two men--Brian Hartwell, 34, of Capistrano Beach and Pat Carlucci, 35, of Anaheim--had floated in 63-degree water about 500 yards offshore for about an hour Thursday night, using a seat cushion and an ice chest to stay afloat, according to Sheriff’s Lt. Richard J. Olson.

John Sampson of San Clemente, returning alone from Ensenada in his 33-foot sailboat the Teaser, heard the men’s cries, pulled them aboard and took them to Dana Point Harbor, Olson said.

The men were examined by paramedics and sent home, he said.
