Major League Baseball Roundup : Wallach’s 3 Homers Not Enough

Tim Wallach, who homered only once in the first month of the season, hit three home runs and drove in six runs Monday night, but the Montreal Expos still lost to the Atlanta Braves, 10-7, at Atlanta.

“It’d be a bigger thrill if we’d have won,” Wallach said.

The former Cal State Fullerton All-American, who was 7 for 18 in a four-game weekend series against the New York Mets, has 10 hits in his last 22 at-bats.

He hit two homers off David Palmer, who picked up the win despite allowing five hits and five runs in five innings. Palmer, winless in his first four decisions, was the beneficiary of a 12-hit attack and a five-run fifth inning that gave the Braves a 9-5 lead.

“I happened to be the guy who went five innings,” Palmer said. “I didn’t have a very good curveball and I made a couple of mistakes to Wallach. I guess it could have been a lot worse.”

The Braves scored only 19 runs in six previous appearances by Palmer, whose earned-run average was only 3.22.

Atlanta’s offense included four hits by Dion James and home runs by Ozzie Virgil and Dale Murphy.

N.Y. Yankees 6, Chicago 1--Unbeaten Charles Hudson scattered eight hits, and Claudell Washington’s eighth-inning infield single produced three runs at Chicago.

Hudson (4-0) walked two and struck out one in pitching his third complete game while ending the White Sox’ three-game winning streak. Hudson, who has given up only 30 hits in 43 innings, lowered his earned-run average to 2.09.

Chicago starter Richard Dotson (1-3) was the loser, though he allowed just five hits in 7 innings.

The Yankees, who had lost six of their previous eight games, held a 2-1 lead entering the eighth. Dotson loaded the bases with a walk to Willie Randolph, a single to Wayne Tolleson and a walk to Joel Skinner and gave way to reliever Jim Winn.

One out later, with the runners moving on a 3-and-2 pitch, Washington hit a high bouncer to first baseman Greg Walker and beat Winn to the bag. Randolph and Skinner scored, as did Tolleson when Winn, attempting to get Skinner, threw wildly to the plate.

San Diego 9, Pittsburgh 5--At San Diego, Carmelo Martinez hit a three-run homer to drive in his first runs since April 16 and Benito Santiago also homered as the Padres ended a five-game losing streak.

The Padres had scored as many as six runs only three times while losing 20 of their first 26 games. Storm Davis (1-4) pitched 5 innings for his first National League victory despite giving up seven hits and three walks.

Martinez, mired in a 3-for-28 slump, gave the Padres a 6-1 lead in the second inning with his second home run of the season.
