ORANGE COUNTY PREP BASEBALL : Roundup : Brea-Olinda Continues Mastery Over Valencia on Murray’s Homer, 3-2

Jim Murray hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning to lead Brea-Olinda to a 3-2 victory over first-place Valencia Friday in an Orange League baseball game at Brea-Olinda.

It was the third time that third-place Brea-Olinda (8-5, 9-11) has upset first-place Valencia (9-4, 13-8) this season.

Murray (5-5) also pitched a complete game, gave up seven hits and struck out five. Valencia led, 2-0, when Russ Barnes and Rick Rizzo singled before Murray hit his fifth home run of the season with two outs on a 3-0 pitch off loser Mike Edwards.

Magnolia 5, Anaheim 0--Marty Ness (3-4) threw a three-hitter and struck out seven and Tom Woodburn had a solo home run in the fourth and a two-run double in the sixth as the Sentinels (5-7-1, 8-11-1) won at Anaheim. Mark Lilgeros had a single and a double and three RBIs. Anaheim is 2-11, 4-19.

In the Century League:

Villa Park 7, Foothill 5 (9 innnings)--Tony Inga doubled, took third on a sacrifice and scored on a throwing error in the top of the ninth for the Spartans. Jason Wilkerson, who sacrificed and took second on the error, scored on a double by Chris Bell for the second run of the inning. Villa Park (10-3, 17-8), which clinched a share of the league title, has a two-game lead over Canyon and ends the season with two games against the Comanches next week. Foothill is 6-7, 10-13.

Canyon 2, Santa Ana Valley 1--John Cummings had a season-high 16 strikeouts, including the final nine outs, to lead the second-place Comanches (8-5, 15-7) at Santa Aan Valley. Canyon scored two runs in the second on four consecutive walks by losing pitcher Dave Solis and an RBI single by Scott Myers off reliever Juan Sanchez. Santa Ana Valley is 6-7, 9-14.

Santa Ana 4, El Modena 0--John Hefler hit his seventh home run of the season and also had a two-run single to lead the Saints (7-6, 14-9) at Santa Ana. Hefler, a senior, singled in a pair of runs in the third to give Santa Ana a 2-0 lead. His home run in the fifth put Santa Ana ahead, 3-0. Jason Harned hit a home run in the sixth for Santa Ana.

Sergio Guererro pitched 4 innings and Ray Lopez the final 2 for Santa Ana. El Modena is 2-11, 5-15.

In the Garden Grove League:

Bolsa Grande 2, Garden Grove 0--Eric Schreifels (5-2) threw a two-hitter and struck out six and Tony Beall went 2 for 3 and scored a run as the Matadors won at Garden Grove. The Matadors (7-6, 12-9) took sole possession of second place with a one-game lead over the Argonauts (6-7, 11-12) and Santiago.

Santiago 12, Rancho Alamitos 8--Ricardo Gallardo was 2 for 3 with a home run and Tony Alfaro was 2 for 4 with a solo home run to lead the Cavaliers (6-7, 9-12) at home. Carlos Leon was 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Santiago is tied for third place with Garden Grove and plays the Argonauts twice next week to end the season. Bruce Smalley was 2 for 4 with three RBIs for Rancho Alamitos.

La Quinta 8, Los Amigos 7--Tim Park was 4 for 4 with three RBIs and three runs scored and Jeff Wood was 3 for 3 with a run scored as the Aztecs (13-0, 21-2) won at Los Amigos. Mike Wilson (12-1) pitched a complete game, allowing 12 hits and striking out 12, to record the victory.

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran 2, Southern California Christian 1--Rick Gress hit a sacrifice fly to break a 1-1 tie in the sixth for the Lancers (8-3, 16-7) at home. Doug Shperly has singled home the tying run earlier in the inning. Scot Wire (9-4) relieved in the fifth to get the victory. Chet Lambie was 3 for 4 with a home run for Southern California Christian.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Orange 11, Woodbridge 4--The Panthers (10-3, 16-7) clinched a share of the league title and the league’s No. 1 Southern Section playoff berth with the victory at Orange. Woodbridge (8-5, 13-10) scored two runs in the first and second to take a 4-0 lead. But Orange came back with seven runs including three on a bases-loaded triple by Jim Vlcek in the second. He was 2 for 3 with five RBIs for Orange, which had 12 hits.

Kerri Reed was 2 for 3 with two doubles, Paul Vinci was 2 for 5, John Miscovich was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, Emilio Avila was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Skip Tanner was 2 for 4 with an RBI for Orange.

Laguna Beach 6, Trabuco Hills 4--Doug Lawler hit a three-run home run in the sixth to lift the Artists (3-10, 5-14-1) over the Mustangs (7-6, 9-7-1) at Laguna Beach. It was the sixth consecutive loss for Trabuco Hills, which won its first seven league games.

Pete Schmitt had a single and Gary Hitzler a ground-rule double in the sixth before Lawler hit his second home run of the season. Lawler also had a triple. Schmitt had a sole home run in the second for Laguna Beach. Scott McDonald (4-5) got the victory in relief. Ted Savage was 2 for 4 for Laguna Beach, including a single to open the game. It marked the 13th time in 20 games he has reached base to open the game.

Laguna Hills 15, Costa Mesa 2--Chris Sheff hit a three-run home run and Aaron Arredondo hit a two-run home run as the Hawks (8-5, 14-9) moved into a second-place tie with Woodbridge.

Arredondo was 2 for 4 with four RBIs and Sheff was 3 for 4. Jay Christensen was 2 for 4 with four RBIs.

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 2, Mission Viejo 1--Chris Ashbach doubled home Matt Spence, a transfer from Mater Dei, with two outs in the seventh to break a 1-1 tie as the Cougars (11-2, 20-3) clinched at least a share of the league title. Spence was a pinch-runner for Mike Pierce, who singled with two outs and moved to second on a walk to Tommy Adams.

Brent Snyder (8-1) pitched a complete game for Capistrano Valley. The Cougars led, 1-0, in the third on a home run by Tommy Adams, his seventh. Mission Viejo (5-8, 14-8) scored in the fifth on a triple by Dan Reed and a single by Matt Balsz.

Dana Hills 4, El Toro 2--J. B. Hollis pitched a three-hitter and hit a three-run home run in the first inning to lead Dana Hills (9-4, 15-8-1) at El Toro (5-8, 14-10). Greg Erickson was 1 for 3 with a sacrifice fly for Dana Hills, which clinched a playoff berth and took sole possession of second place.

San Clemente 4, Irvine 3 (9 innings)--John Fiorenza singled to left to drive in Greg Jamroz from third in the bottom of the ninth to lead San Clemente. Andy Greek (1-8) pitched a complete game and hit a solo home run for San Clemente (1-12, 3-17-1).

In the Sunset League:

Edison 10, Fountain Valley 3--Billy Bertucci had two hits and four RBIs including a two-run single during a five-run fifth for the Chargers (7-6, 15-10) at Fountain Valley. Terrance Tuwill also had a two-run double in the fifth and Chris Powell had an RBI single in the fifth. Steve Kowen and Jon Martin had two hits and an RBI for Edison. Mike Guccione (5-2) pitched a complete game for Edison. Fountain Valley is 5-8, 9-12.
