Candice Bergen has landed the leading role in “Mayflower Madam,” a movie that’s being shot in Atlanta and New York for CBS. She’s cast as Sydney Biddle Barrows, a socialite who ran a high-priced “escort service.” Also starring are Chris Sarandon and Chita Rivera. . . . That movie will follow on the heels of CBS’ “Poker Alice,” in which Elizabeth Taylor plays a woman who wins a brothel in a poker game. It airs May 22.

Briefly noted: NBC’s “Late Night With David Letterman” will originate from Las Vegas May 18-21. . . . Carroll O’Connor, who played Archie Bunker on “All in the Family,” will play a Catholic cardinal in “The Father Clements Story,” a TV movie for NBC. . . . Is there a new career in the future for “Kate & Allie”? Check out Monday’s episode, in which they open a catering business. . . . Coming up next Sunday on NBC is “The Return of the Six Million Dollar Man and the Bionic Woman,” with Lee Majors and Lindsay Wagner portraying the superpower characters from their old TV shows.

Duncan Regehr, Peter Donat, Brian McNamara and Julia Montgomery will star in “Earth-Star Voyager,” a four-hour drama that will kick off “The Disney Sunday Movie” on ABC next fall. It’s about a group of astronauts who set out from Earth in the year 2087 to find a new planet to colonize.

CBS will televise the 1987 Miss Universe Pageant from Singapore on May 26. Bob Barker and Mary Frann, who co-hosted the Miss USA Pageant in February, will do the same for this event. Representing the United States will be Michelle Renee Royer of El Paso, Tex.

Shirley Lauro’s play “Open Admissions” is being turned into a movie for CBS. It will star Jane Alexander as a troubled speech professor, Dennis Farina as her husband and Michael Beach as a failing student who reawakens in her the feeling of what it is to teach.
