SWEEPS SHOWS--More splashy ratings-period programs are featured on this week’s cover.

Two of them are from CBS (Channels 2 and 8), the two-part “Roses Are for the Rich” at 9 p.m. Sunday and Tuesday, and “Poker Alice,” starring Elizabeth Taylor, at 9 p.m. Friday.

“Roses Are for the Rich” stars Lisa Hartman, Bruce Dern, Joe Penny, Richard Masur, Howard Duff, Morgan Stevens, Sharon Wyatt, Jim Youngs and Betty Buckley in a story about a beautiful young woman’s rise from Appalachia to a successful business career, culminating in her being charged with murder. It’s based on Jonell Lawson’s novel of the same name.

In “Poker Alice,” Taylor makes a rare appearance in a TV drama as a lighthearted Western heroine, a Bible-reading woman who becomes stranded in New Mexico after a failed romance. George Hamilton and Tom Skerritt co-star.

Meanwhile, David Carradine, Charles Haid, Howard Hesseman, David Morse, Jan-Michael Vincent, Paul Sanchez, Richard Dysart and Dennis Farina star in NBC’s “Six Against the Rock” at 9 p.m. Monday (Channels 4, 36, 39), an account of an actual attempted escape from infamous Alcatraz in 1946.

And for levity, ABC has scheduled “The American Comedy Awards” at 9 p.m. Tuesday (Channels 7, 3, 10, 42), a special created by George Schlatter. Taking place live at the Hollywood Palladium, the comedy awards will spotlight a host of stars, including Lily Tomlin, Whoopi Goldberg, Eddie Murphy, Tim Conway, Pee-wee Herman, Walter Matthau and Betty White.
