Tenor Placido Domingo will perform a one-hour, 15-minute religious concert as Pope John Paul II holds Mass at the Coliseum on Sept. 15, the show’s producers said Friday.

Nearly 100,000 people, required for security purposes to be in the stadium two hours before the pontiff’s arrival, will watch the presentation, said Tom McCoy, who with his wife, former gymnast Cathy Rigby, is producing the show.

McCoy said the presentation is not intended to be a Hollywood gala, and the city’s Roman Catholic Archdiocese has set a $50,000 ca0 on production costs.

“The concert is directly tailored to the occasion and the entire production has been planned with complete sensitivity to the liturgical nature of the event,” he said.

Actor Joseph Campanella, Grammy-winning gospel singer Sandi Patti and leading Roman Catholic entertainer Brother John Michael Talbot will also perform.

All participants have volunteered, McCoy said.

In addition to the top acts, two Southern California church-member choirs, one with 1,500 participants and the other with 95, will be featured. A 65-piece orchestra and a brass ensemble will round out the concert.

Radio City Music Hall Productions will put on a concert preceding another scheduled Mass at Dodger Stadium on Sept. 16.

The city’s diversity of culture will be the theme. No other details were announced.

Tickets to both Masses will be distributed free through local parishes.
