Two San Diego men were fatally shot Sunday and early Monday in separate drive-by shootings, a crime police say is on the rise in San Diego County.

Duane Johnson, 31, died of a gunshot wound in the neck, and David Edwards, 38, died of a gunshot wound in the chest, Deputy Coroner Chuck Bolton said.

Police said they found Edwards lying on the sidewalk in the 3000 block of Imperial Avenue at 10:15 p.m., bleeding from the wound in his chest. He was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center, where he later died.

“Witnesses at the scene said a vehicle drove eastbound on Imperial Avenue at a slow rate of speed when the passenger opened fire at the victim, who was talking to friends on the sidewalk,” Sgt. Chuck Sleeper said.

In the second attack, Johnson was found dead at 2:40 a.m. in the 200 block of Southlook Avenue.

Sleeper said residents reported hearing gunshots, then a car speeding away from the scene.
