College Runner Collapses at Track Meet, Dies
A California (Pa.) State athlete collapsed Thursday after completing a qualifying heat in the 1,500-meter run at the NCAA Division II track and field championships in Cape Girardeau, Mo., and was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital, officials said.
The athlete was identified as Paul Bryan of Jamaica. Several trainers attempted to resuscitate Bryan on the track but were unable to revive him.
“The temperature was in the 90s, but we don’t know whether the heat was a factor,” said Ron Hines, sports information director of Southeast Missouri State, which is playing host the meet.
