Harry Gant, running on only five cylinders, held on long enough to win the Winn-Dixie 300 Busch Grand National stock car race by 1.1 seconds, his first Grand National division victory since 1982, when he won this same event.
Gant, driving a Buick, won with an average speed of 139.643 m.p.h. at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The next four finishers were Darrell Waltrip, Larry Pearson, Jack Ingram and Dale Earnhardt.
Earlier, Patty Moise became the first female to win a race in the Busch Grand National division when she won the Winn-Dixie Challenge that qualified her for the Winn-Dixie 300. She finished 22nd in that race.
