A 47-year-old Oceanside woman was fatally shot Saturday by an armed man who entered her room at the Mira Mar Motor Inn on North Hill Street, police reported.
The victim, identified as Mary Jean Baldwin, died at 8:20 a.m. during surgery at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla.
Police arrested a suspect, Marine Cpl. Mancy Thompson of Camp Pendleton, a shortly after the 3 a.m. shooting. Thompson, 22, is assigned to the 1st Marine Division and was being held by authorities on the base Sunday.
Oceanside Police Sgt. Bill Krunglevich said the shooting occurred when a man with a handgun entered Room 171, where Baldwin lived. Several witnesses in the room at the time said the intruder ordered everyone to lie on the floor. When Baldwin instead walked toward him, the man shot her once in the chest.
Baldwin is survived by a daughter, Andrea, of Oceanside.
