James and Reese on All-State First Team

Joey James of Orange Coast College and Brent Reese of Rancho Santiago were named to the all-state first team by a vote of coaches Sunday at the state baseball tournament.

James, an outfielder who hit .390 during the regular season, was the co-state player of the year last season with Frank Halcovich of College of the Canyons.

Reese, a sophomore first baseman, hit .480. He and James were voted the co-players of the year in the Orange Empire Conference this season.

The rest of the first team: pitchers Troy Kent (Southwestern), Clyde Keller (Sacramento City); catchers Jorge Pedre (Los Angeles Harbor) and Mike Bible (College of Canyons); first basemen Mike Burton (College of the Sequoias), Greg Middlekauff (San Jose), Marcus Felder (Contra Costa); designated hitter Coy Baldwin (Marin); utility Todd Pick (Lassen); infielders Ken Shamburg (Butte), Bret Barbarie (Cerritos), Sean Higgins (Los Angeles Harbor), Rich Casaroti (Santa Rosa), Craig Kala (San Mateo); outfielders Brian Turang (Long Beach City), Jim Tesmer (Fresno) and Marty Poieto (San Bernardino).

OCC designated hitter Dave Staton (.360) and third baseman Ralph Ramirez (.392), Rancho Santiago outfielder Frank Appice (.346) and Golden West second baseman Chip Damato (.399) were voted second-team all-state.
