3 Youths Nabbed After $300,000 Robbery at Zales

Three youths who robbed Zales Jewelers in Mission Valley Shopping Center of about $300,000 in jewelry Wednesday afternoon were captured an hour later when they fled after an automobile accident at 9th Avenue and Beech Street.

Witnesses to the accident pursued the three youths and alerted police officers, who later arrested two of the suspects near the Navy Hospital in Balboa Park and a third near San Diego City College.

Officer Nate Caplan said one shot was fired during the robbery, which occurred about 4:40 p.m., but no one was injured. After the crash, a motorist, a federal officer, several police officers and a police dog were involved in the chase.

Police said that a gun and the $300,000 in jewelry was recovered. The names of the three juveniles were not released.
