Federal inspectors have found 68 instances of intentional disabling of safety warning devices and equipment that automatically stops trains since January’s Amtrak-Conrail crash near Baltimore that killed 16 people, the head of the Federal Railroad Administration said. John H. Riley told the Senate surface transportation subcommittee that inspectors have found most of the tampering on Amtrak passenger trains, where they have conducted the most examinations. It does not begin to measure freight train incidents, he said.
