20 Whale Watchers Injured
A huge wave smashed into a 90-foot charter boat packed with teen-age whale watchers today, tossing passengers to the deck and injuring at least 20, including a youth thrown overboard.
The Super Squirrel II was hit by a wave about 10:30 a.m. while carrying 115 schoolchildren and nine teachers on a whale-watching expedition near Block Island, the Coast Guard said. The boat was able to make it to the island. There were no fatalities and the youth who was washed overboard was quickly rescued but suffered a leg injury, officials said.
