Don Mattingly, New York Yankee first baseman, will be sidelined for about two weeks with a back injury.
Team physician John Bonamo said that an examination revealed two injured disks in Mattingly’s lower back.
“His symptoms are diminishing, and the plan is conservative treatment, not surgical care,” Bonamo said.
Mattingly, who is hitting .311 with 6 home runs and 36 runs batted in, said he injured the back while fielding grounders before last Thursday’s game against Milwaukee. He denied a published report that he hurt himself during a friendly wrestling match with pitcher Bob Shirley before the game. Shirley was released Friday.
