Proposed 2-Year Anaheim Budget Contains Deficit of $3.6 Million

A two-year budget, calling for Anaheim to spend $428.64 million in 1987-88 and $429.12 million in 1988-89, was detailed Tuesday before the City Council.

The plan calls for cuts in some services, including street maintenance, repair of sidewalks and curbs and building maintenance. Even with those cuts, the budget shows a $3.6-million deficit.

The plan also calls for an improved public safety program, renovation of the 20-year-old Convention Center and a traffic improvement program. The Convention Center renovation would be funded solely through a proposed 2% increase in the hotel bed tax--increasing the tax to 10%. The council would have to look at other ways of finding money for the public safety and traffic programs, City Manager William O. Talley said.

The proposed budget represents a 5.3% increase over the current spending plan, Talley said. However, after spending of $10.7 million for an electric and water utility project and an $8.3-million storm drain bond issue are subtracted, the actual increase is 1.5%, he said.
