Lawndale : New School District Studied
City Councilman Larry Rudolph has asked the city attorney to investigate the possibility of the city seceding from the Centinela Valley Union High School District and forming a unified district, serving kindergarten through 12th grade.
The Lawndale School District now operates seven schools, with classes from kindergarten through eighth grade. Lawndale students then attend either Hawthorne High School or Leuzinger High School in Lawndale.
Rudolph, who last month asked the district to consider reopening Lawndale High School, said it is time for Lawndale residents to take control of their schools. Currently, only one of five Centinela school board seats is designated for a Lawndale resident.
Lawndale High School was closed in 1981 because of declining enrollment, and the campus is used as an adult and continuation school called Lloyde Continuation School.
Some Lawndale residents recently urged the district to sell part of the former Lawndale High School site for a new sheriff’s substation. The district rejected the idea, however, saying the station would be inappropriate next to a school campus.
Officials from both school boards have said that a Lawndale unified school district is not feasible with only one high school.
