Small Plane and Hospital Copter in Near Collision
A small plane and a hospital helicopter passed within 100 feet of each other, prompting the helicopter to take evasive action Friday night, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said.
The pilot of the helicopter for the UCLA Medical Center reported that he took evasive action when the unidentified small plane, which was climbing at an altitude of about 3,500 feet, came close, said Tom Aina, the FAA’s regional duty officer.
The incident occurred about 5:30 p.m. seven miles west of Van Nuys Airport in the San Fernando Valley. The helicopter was en route to Santa Monica Airport.
The FAA was investigating, Aina said.
