SportsScope : Oxy Woman Smashes 1,500 Meter Mark

Occidental College senior Cresey Stewart won the 1,500-meter run while setting a national record recently at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships at Naperville, Ill.
Stewart’s 4:27.11 was two seconds better than the record and five seconds faster than her best. Teammate Michele Trimble, a sophomore, finished third, capturing All-American honors with a 4:32.10.
Three Occidental men made All-America. Chris Beard finished fourth in the hammer throw with a 174-1 and eighth in the shot at 54 feet. Lionel Shaw’s 1:51.4 placed fifth in the 800 meters. Shaw finished eighth in the 1,500 meters at 3:58. Peter Quint took fifth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 9:06.81.
Bruce Fuller, a sophomore center fielder for Occidental College, was named to the third team GTE/Academic All-American team for the second year.
Fuller batted .279 this season, starting all games. He stole 30 of 32 bases to lead the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
A mathematics major, Fuller has a 3.81 grade-point average.
The city of Glendale and the Verdugo Hills Bowl will instruct children 8 to 15 years old beginning July 7. Applications may be obtained at the alley at 3727 Foothill Blvd., La Crescenta.
Children will receive 10 one-hour lessons, twice a week. The fee is $5 and the deadline is July 4.
