About 200 firefighters, with the assistance of at least three aircraft, battled a raging fire that burned more than 800 acres of brush near Miramar Naval Air Station Thursday. No injuries or damage to structures was reported.

The fire began at 10:30 a.m. on one side of Sycamore Canyon and was thought to be under control by 1:30 p.m. But by 1:35 p.m., the blaze flare up again and continued to burn uncontrollably for several hours, Navy spokesman Brad Whitus said.

The fire was fought by air as it burned around a mountain and across the canyon, Whitus said.

The blaze originated near Pomerado and Sycamore Canyon roads, and burned northeast toward the base, he said. But it was unknown how the fire started.

Wind conditions hampered firefighting efforts, he said.
