A police detective serving a warrant in a Highland Park neighborhood shot a pit bull dog that had broken its chain and charged the officer, authorities said. Residents cheered when Detective Sal Nares shot the dog, which had a reputation for chasing children, Nares said. Detective Jack Rinallo said Nares, who is assigned to the city attorney’s office, was serving the warrant on Avenue 60 when the dog tried to attack him. The wounded dog ran beneath a house and was retrieved by animal control officers, Rinallo said. The dog had wounds to his left leg and right ear. To the north, San Joaquin County authorities shot and killed a pit bull that threatened to attack them while they were serving a search warrant.
