Kinchen Decisions Smith in Fight
James Kinchen of San Diego began his comeback Thursday with a unanimous 10-round decision over Randy Smith of Arizona in a middleweight fight in front of 1,100 at the El Cortez Convention Center.
Kinchen (38-3-2), who was a top contender for the middleweight title before he lost to Juan Roldan of Argentina in early April, won all 10 rounds on each of the three judges’ cards. He battered Smith (17-10) with combinations and staggered him with a left hook in the ninth round.
The scheduled fight between Irving Mitchell of San Diego and Rafael Velarde of Juarez, Mexico, was canceled because Velarde was unable to cross the border.
In a flyweight fight, undefeated Ricky Romero (9-0) of Orange knocked out Regelio Martinez (8-2-2) of Los Angeles at 1:59 of the third round.
