An attorney who stopped on the freeway to assist a motorist in a disabled car was killed when he fell over a guard railing on a bridge and plunged 100 feet, authorities reported.

David Shum, 32, of Mission Beach, was driving with a friend on California 52 west of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard at 11 p.m. Thursday when they pulled over to assist a motorist whose car they had seen hit the guard rail.

According to authorities, Shum was standing on the shoulder of the highway when he attempted to avoid another car that was coming toward him. He jumped over the guard rail without knowing about the drop-off, according to his friend, whose name was not released by police.

Shum landed on a concrete drainage ditch and died at the scene of severe head injuries, according to Deputy Coroner George Dickason.
