Carl (The Truth) Williams (18-2) took control early and stopped Bert Cooper (16-2) at the beginning of the eighth round of a scheduled 12-round U.S. Boxing Assn. heavyweight title fight in Atlantic City, N.J.
Cooper’s trainer, former heavyweight champion Joe Frazier, refused to allow him to answer the bell.
Williams, ranked fifth by the International Boxing Federation, floored his Philadelphia opponent with a counter left hook in the opening round. Cooper rose easily and answered with a body combination but never established his power thereafter.
