SPORTS SCOPE : 2-Man Pro Volleyball Will Return to Hermosa Beach Pier This Weekend

Two-man professional volleyball returns to the South Bay this weekend with the Miller Lite Hermosa Beach Open at the Hermosa Beach Pier. The field of 32 teams will include Olympic and World Cup gold medalist Karch Kiraly, three-time world champion Singin Smith and partner Randy Stoklos, John Hanley and John Stevenson and current team champions Mike Dodd and Tim Hovland, who won last weekend’s tournament in Orange County.

Games will start at 9 a.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. Sunday. The finals are scheduled for about 3 p.m. Sunday. The players will compete for a purse of $20,000, with the winners taking $6,500. The tournament has a double-elimination format. Each match is a single game to 15 points.

The pro tour moves to Pacific Palisades for the Fourth of July weekend and does not return to the South Bay until the final weekend of September for the traditional world championship at Redondo Beach Seaside Lagoon.

The Slam ‘n’ Jam summer high school basketball league will culminate with the 16-team Summer Grand Finale on Monday through Friday at Carson High School. The final day will include a clinic featuring two NBA players and the finals of the Spot-Bilt Slam Dunk Contest.

The tournament teams are Cleveland, Hawthorne, Morningside, St. Monica, Torrey Pines, Compton, Carson, Artesia, Palos Verdes, Pomona, Santa Clara, Lakewood, Lynwood, St. Bernard, Crossroads and Rolling Hills. Teams will be split into four pools. There will be six games each day Monday through Thursday starting at 9 a.m. Pool winners will advance to Friday’s semifinals at 1 and 2:30 p.m. A clinic will follow at 4, run by Atlanta Hawks assistant coach Brendan Suhr and featuring players Xavier McDaniel of Seattle and Sam Vincent of Boston. Youngsters will receive free posters and autographs.

At 5 p.m. the third-place game will be played, preceding the slam dunk contest at 6. The tournament championship will begin at 7:30. Admission each day is $5 for adults, $3 for students with identification and $2 for children.

Westchester, Banning, Serra and Inglewood will be among 40 schools competing in the fifth Bosco Tech Summer Hoops Spectacular high school basketball tournament opening Tuesday at Bosco Tech in Rosemead. Westchester, expected to be a City 4-A title contender next season, opens at 6 p.m. Wednesday against the winner of Ocean View vs. Kennedy. Inglewood, which has a strong nucleus, plays at 2 Wednesday the winner of Nogales vs. Glendale. Serra, which has one of the Southland’s top players in high-scoring James Moses, will face Chapparal High of Las Vegas at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Banning plays Blair at 2 Tuesday, with the winner facing St. Anthony, which has the all-time Long Beach scoring champion in Darrick Martin.

Other top teams are defending CIF 5-A champion Mater Dei and perennial powers Santa Monica and Long Beach Poly. The tournament continues through July 5, with the semifinals at 6:15 and 8:45 p.m. July 4. The championship will be played at 8:30 p.m. July 5, preceded by the third-place game at 7:15.

Mike Aspray of Cal State Dominguez Hills, co-pitcher of the year in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn., has signed with the Chicago Cubs and been assigned to Geneva, N.Y., in the Class A New York-Penn League. Aspray, a right-hander out of Gardena, was not drafted but was 12-3 this season and 17-5 over the last two years.
