A fire that apparently broke out in a hotel destroyed five buildings in the tiny Gold Rush town of Alleghany in the Sierra foothills and one person was critically burned, officials said. “It just about wiped out the town of Alleghany,” said Paul Lasich of the state Division of Forestry in Auburn, who estimated the 100-year-old town’s population at about 30. The Gold Rush-era town in Sierra County is about 20 miles north of Nevada City. The blaze destroyed five buildings--including the hotel and residences along with five acres of brush and grass before it was controlled by state, federal and local fire departments. One unidentified man suffered serious burns and was hospitalized, Lasich said. Cause of the fire was under investigation.
