Montebello : Interim Budget Approved

The Montebello City Council has approved an interim budget that allows the city to continue spending at current levels to provide community services until a final budget for 1987-88 is approved.

The city is considering eliminating 12 of 387 full-time municipal jobs to reduce spending that has cut deeply into city reserves, City Administrator Joseph M. Goeden said. The City Council, which approved the interim budget last week, is to consider the proposed budget July 13, Goeden said.

As proposed, the city anticipates spending $28.3 million during the current fiscal year, which began Wednesday and ends June 30, 1988. Spending for last year was an estimated $28 million.

Revenues of $30.1 million are expected during 1987-88, compared to an estimated $30.9 million the city received last year, Goeden said. This year’s budget includes a general fund reserve of $450,000.

The city started the year with a general fund reserve of $900,000, about $1-million less than the previous year, Assistant City Administrator Richard Torres said. The general fund pays the city’s operating expenses, including the cost of police and fire protection.
