An internal investigation into the Virginia Tech basketball program uncovered 12 NCAA violations and found that, between 1981 and 1986, no player received a degree, school officials said.

Among the violations outlined at a news conference by President William Lavery, interim athletic director Ray Smoot and Vice Rector W.S. White was an attempt by an unidentified faculty member to award an independent course study grade to a student-athlete before any work was done.

Another violation involved a booster providing $7,200 worth of automobile financing to the wife of an athlete, and several others included pickup basketball games being played outside the practice season or during visits by recruits, athletes receiving free or discounted lodging during their summer jobs and a booster giving players free meals at his restaurant.

University officials declined comment on whether action would be taken against individuals involved and also declined to discuss possible action involving Coach Charlie Moir and the unidentified faculty member. Moir, the winningest coach in Virginia Tech history, was not available for comment.
