Irvine : Design Contest Won by Turtle Rock Class

Students in a sixth-grade class at Turtle Rock Elementary School have won a competition conducted in Orange and Los Angeles counties to design a house of the future.

About 600 sixth-grade students from the two counties took part in the recent contest, sponsored by Bramalea Homes, a Costa Mesa-based builder. The winners were announced by Bill Honig, state superintendent of public instruction.

The Turtle Rock sixth-graders, whose teacher is Kathleen Pommer, designed a house for the year 2000. Entitled “Sea Terrace,” the house design calls for it to be near the ocean and partially submerged “so you can watch the beauties of the deep,” according to the Turtle Rock students.

As winners of the two-county competition, the Turtle Rock students will receive a certificate of recognition from the state Department of Education. In addition, Bramalea will give the class an expense-paid trip to Disneyland.

Peter Perrin, president of Bramalea, said the student competition was part of an effort to find out what home buyers of the future want.
