The 21st annual Sawdust Festival, which opens today, features exhibits by more than 250 artists, ethnic foods, live music and a Hawaiian musician who plays island songs on a synthesizer, spokeswoman Tina Arana said.

Located on a 2 1/2-acre site at 935 Laguna Canyon Road, the festival also will offer arts and crafts workshops for children, who will use materials donated by festival artists.

Founded in 1966, it was named the Sawdust Festival because the walkways throughout the festival grounds are covered with sawdust.

The festival lasts through Aug. 30 and “should be a great festival, maybe the best we’ve ever had,” Arana said.
