The postmaster of San Jose was reportedly under investigation by postal inspectors and a federal grand jury, the San Jose Mercury News reported. The newspaper said James H. Aanenson, 45, may have attempted to overcharge the government two years ago when he purchased a house after moving from Missoula, Mont., to Saratoga after assuming the San Jose post. At issue were fees paid under a GMAC Mortgage Corp. relocation program for government employees, and whether Aanenson, when he bought his home, obtained money for costs not usually covered by the government. While the postmaster, his attorney and postal officials in both San Jose and the Western Region Headquarters in San Bruno denied an investigation was in progress, Postal Inspector Rolf Adams in San Francisco told the newspaper “there is reason to believe” criminal violations may have been committed, and that a U.S. attorney would have testimony presented to a grand jury.
