Marc Sergeant of Belgium won the 70-mile fifth stage of the Tour de France cycling race from Pforzheim, West Germany, to Strasbourg Sunday, and Erich Maechler of Switzerland kept the overall lead.

Another Belgian, Herman Frison, won the fourth leg of the race, a 47.4-mile course run earlier in the day from Stuttgart to Pforzheim.

Sergeant finished 16 seconds ahead of second-place Bruno Wojtinek of France in the first stage of the race to finish in France. Sergeant’s time was 2 hours 32 minutes 39 seconds.

The fifth stage began under a sunny sky, with mountain cyclists Luis Herrera of Colombia, Andy Hampsten of the United States and Raul Alcala of Mexico pulling ahead of the pack. But at 32 miles, Sergeant took the lead.

The two stages run Sunday caused little change in the overall leaders. Maechler, who took the lead on Saturday, remained ahead with a total time of 12:55:15, followed by Joerg Mueller, also of Switzerland, 44 seconds behind.
