Eric Woods of Newport Beach posted the best first-day score in U.S. Amateur Public Links golf championship.
Woods, 23, shot a four-under par 68 at the Glenview Golf Course in suburban Cincinnati. Play was suspended at about 4 p.m. because of rain, with 78 of 159 players having finished the round.
Woods, a graduate of UC Irvine, had six birdies, and three-putted for bogeys on the second and sixth holes.
Gary Chandler, 35, of Dallas, trails Woods by three strokes with a one-under par 71.
