The Region : State Should Pay Allred, Judge Decides

The state and not former state Sen. John Schmitz should pay Los Angeles attorney Gloria Allred $20,000 because he called her a “slick butch lawyeress,” Superior Court Judge Leon Savitch ruled. Allred, who said the taxpayers should not have to make the payment in settlement of her 1982 suit against the former Newport Beach legislator, said she will ask the state controller not to issue the check. She said she plans to ask members of the state Senate Rules Committee to support her request. Savitch rejected the argument of her attorney, Michael Maroko, that the committee had decided against paying the settlement for Schmitz.
