Former Cal State Soccer Star Named Golden Eagles Coach

Former all-conference goaltender Larry Draluck of Cal State Los Angeles, who has been an assistant coach for the Golden Eagles for four years, has been named head soccer coach.

Draluck, 27, replaces Berhane Andeberhan, who resigned to become women’s coach at Stanford. Considering that the Golden Eagles posted a 4-11-4 record last year--their first losing record since soccer became a varsity sport in 1979--Draluck realizes he may have a difficult task.

“It’s going to be a challenge,” he said. “I’ll be taking over a team that’s essentially Berhane’s--it’s not mine yet. If the team accepts me and my ideas, then I think we can be successful.”

Draluck says the biggest difference between Andeberhan and him is coaching style. “I take more chances (offensively),” he said. “I have more of an attacking style. We’re going to have incredible skill.”

Cal State is hoping that Draluck coaches as well as he played for the Golden Eagles from 1978 through 1981. A four-year starter and two-time All-California Collegiate Athletic Assn. performer, Draluck led Cal State to the NCAA Division II finals in 1981. The Golden Eagles lost in the title game, 1-0, to Tampa.

Draluck played professionally in Mexico for Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara and for the team that represented the United States in the 1985 Maccabiah Games in Israel.

He has also been successful as coach of the South Pasadena High girls the last three years. His teams reached the CIF Southern Section divisional quarterfinals in 1985 and last season when they finished with an 18-3-3 record and won the Rio Hondo League title. Draluck also coached his Southern California Nitemares girls (19 and younger) to the California Youth Soccer Assn. title with a 53-4-5 record.

Two former San Gabriel Valley prep basketball standouts have been named to the U.S. national team that will compete in the World Junior Championships from July 23-30 at Bormio, Italy.

They are forward Stacey Augmon of Nevada-Las Vegas, who starred in high school at Muir of Pasadena, and center Scott Williams of North Carolina, who played at Wilson of Hacienda Heights. Both will be sophomores next season.

Both were All-San Gabriel Valley and All-CIF Southern Section selections in high school. The 6-10 Williams averaged 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead Wilson to the state Division II title as a senior and the 6-8 Augmon averaged 21.5 points and 12 rebounds to help Muir win the Southern Section 4-A title.

Williams played well as a freshman at North Carolina, averaging 5.5 points and 4.2 rebounds while playing 10 to 15 minutes a game. Augmon was academically ineligible at Nevada-Las Vegas but is expected to see considerable playing time next season.

Robert Michel, defensive line coach at Fullerton College the last five years, has been named an assistant coach at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.

Michel, 48, who coached successful teams at Fullerton and has also been a teacher at Woodbridge High in Irvine, said he is anxious to coach at Mt. San Antonio. “I feel like I’ve been rejuvenated,” he said. “Full-time teaching and coaching at this level is what I’ve always wanted to do.”

Michel, the final appointment on first-year Coach Bill Fisk’s staff, is regarded as a strong motivator.
