The Raiders are not the only athletes in Oxnard this month.

More than 4,000 triathletes, swimmers, lawn bowlers, surfers, boxers, cyclists and other athletes will converge on the seaside community for the 27th Oxnard Sports Festival beginning Saturday. The festival has 24 events scheduled the next two weeks.

The Oxnard Bud Light Triathlon at Mandalay Beach on Saturday will kick off the festival with a 1.5-mile swim, a 40-kilometer bicycle ride and 10-kilometer run. The triathlon is the second in the Gold Coast Series of three Ventura County-based triathlons. The series concludes Aug. 15 with a triathlon at Ventura State Beach. The top male and female finishers in the series receive air fare and expenses to a national triathlon competition in Hilton Head, S.C., Sept. 27.

Oxnard’s golf championships will also run Saturday and Sunday at the River Ridge Golf Course. Any golfer with an established handicap as of June is eligible for the tournament. Other opening day-events include tennis, baseball, softball and horseshoes.
