An earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale struck Japan on Thursday afternoon, but there were no reports of damage or casualties, authorities said.

The Meteorological Agency said the midafternoon tremor was centered about 186 miles southwest of Tokyo.

Agency officials said the temblor could not cause extensive damage associated with such high magnitude quake because it struck very deep below the surface.
