100 Flee Toxic Smoke; 12 Hurt
Toxic smoke spewing from a chemical laboratory fire near Inglewood forced the evacuation of about 100 people Friday and sent a dozen Los Angeles County firefighters and sheriff deputies to the hospital, authorities said.
Three deputies, complaining of nausea and breathing difficulties, were taken to Centinela Hospital. They were later reported in stable condition but were expected to be held overnight for observation.
Eight firefighters were taken to Lynwood Hospital and later released. A ninth firefighter was hospitalized for observation. He was reported in good condition.
Cause of the fire, at the Breen Laboratory in the 8900 block of South Vermont Avenue, was under investigation.
